         Breakthroughs in mechanical engineering have the potential to impact a broad range of industries, technologies, and people. Mechanical engineers are using advanced modelling techniques to generate power from micro vibrations, developing advanced materials for use in various defence applications, creating technologies to reduce CO2 and other harmful emissions, expand the utilization of renewable energy and radically change energy and propulsion systems.

        These and our many other projects reflect the wide-ranging interests of our professors and students – while addressing global needs and concerns.The major principal research areas in the Mechanical Engineering Department, each encompassing several laboratories and academic programs that foster in-depth analysis and experimentation. The research areas and their key subjects of focus are:


        Modelling, experimentation, and computation (MMEC) – Advances the formulation of physical and mathematical theories for representing the thermo-mechanical response of natural and engineering materials (solids and fluids) at the Nano, micro, and macro-scales using modelling, experimentation, and computational methodologies. Develop novel computational tools for the robust design and optimization of the variety of thermo-mechanically coupled processes used to manufacture components and devices from these materials.

    Design, manufacturing, and product development

        Advances the designs and methods used to manufacture products, to precision consumer products.

    Controls, instrumentation, and robotics

        Develop automated systems and the robotic technologies which might be used in medicine and in space and sea exploration.

    Energy science and engineering

        Fundamental and applied research in thermodynamics, reactive flows and combustion, heat and mass transport, micro and nanotechnologies, photovoltaic, off-shore wind energy, engines and transportation, cryogenics, and efficient buildings. Focus on high efficiency low emission systems, CO2 capture and renewable energy.

    Mechanical engineering varies from Industrial engineering and Production Engineering
        Mechanical engineering aims to technical or machine-oriented aspects such as design, operation and maintenance. Industrial Engineering aims at human resources in companies in areas such as planning, production, organization, methods.
        Industrial engineering is a branch of engineering dealing with the optimization of complexprocesses or systems It is concerned with the development, improvement, implementation and evaluation of integrated systems of people, money, knowledge, information, equipment, energy, materials, analysis and synthesis, as well as the mathematical, physical and social sciences together with the principles and methods of engineering design to specify, predict, and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems or processes. Its underlying concepts overlap considerably with certain business-oriented disciplines such as operations management, but the engineering side tends to emphasize extensive mathematical proficiency and usage of quantitative methods.
        Depending on the subspecialties involved, industrial engineering may also be known as, or overlap with, operations management, management science, operations research, systems engineering, manufacturing engineering, ergonomics or human factors engineering, safety engineering, or others, depending on the viewpoint or motives of the user. For example, in health care, the engineers known as health management engineers or health systems engineers are, in essence, industrial engineers by another name.
        Production engineering is a combination of manufacturing technology with management science. A production engineer typically has a wide knowledge of engineering practices and is aware of the management challenges related to production. The goal is to accomplish the production process in the smoothest, most-judicious and most-economic way.
        Production engineering encompasses the application of castings, machining processing, joining processes, metal cutting & tool design, metrology, machine tools, machining systems, automation, jigs and fixtures, and die and mould design and material science and design of automobile parts and machine designing and manufacturing. Production engineering also overlaps substantially with manufacturing engineering and industrial engineering.
        In industry, once the design is realized, production engineering concepts regarding work study, ergonomics, operation research, manufacturing management, materials management, production planning, etc., play important roles in efficient production processes. These deal with integrated design and efficient planning of the entire manufacturing system, which is becoming increasingly complex with the emergence of sophisticated production methods and control systems.
        Every branch of engineering has its own specific importance in industry and to the development of it.

    Is Mechanical Engineering Good for girls?
         Mechanical engineering is good for girls as good as for boys.It is a common misunderstanding that mechanical engineering requires hard physical work and women are not up-to the mark. Well as it is said it is a misunderstanding.
         The thing is that some times during your engineering course you may be required to put some physical efforts in practicals. After completion of course you may proceed in your career where no physical efforts are required, for example in the education sector as lecturer or as design engineer, or as an analyst etc.
    Don't Hesitate. If you love it, do it. 

    Higher Education

         The department of Mechanical engineering always empowers students to pursue higher education both in our country and abroad.The major tests for higher education in INDIA are Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). GATE is an all India examination that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in Engineering and Technology.  Being conducted by IISC and the IIT’s, GATE is proven to be the toughest exam in technical education in INDIA.

         The GATE score of a candidate reflects the relative performance level of a candidate. The score is used for admissions to various post-graduate programmes (eg. M.E., M.Tech, direct Ph.D.) in Indian higher education institutes with financial assistance provided by MHRD and other Government agencies.  The score may also be used by Public sector units for employment screening purposes.
         Having good professors in the department who have studied abroad,will also aid in building the confidence and the mind-set of the prepare them for higher education to countries like USA, UK, Australia and Germany. Their support to the students to prepare for  exams like GRE, TOEFL, IELTS etc. will aid the students to reach greater goals.

          Mechanical engineers provide efficient solutions to the development of processes and products, ranging from small component designs to extremely large plant, machinery or vehicles. They can work on all stages of a product, from research and development to design and manufacture, through to installation and final commissioning.
         Most industries rely on a form of mechanical systems and mechanical engineering is thought to be one of the most diverse of all engineering disciplines. There are employment opportunities available in a wide range of sectors, such as the manufacturing, power, construction and medical industries.Mechanical engineers can also be involved in the management of people and resources, as well as the development and use of new materials and technologies.
