The Civil Engineering is the first and foremost branch in the field of engineering, and hence it is known as mother branch of engineering. There are many reasons to move forward in pursuing a career in civil engineering. Civil engineers are members of one of the oldest engineering disciplines and can specialize in many things , including water management, construction, transportation and geotechnical, structural, orenvironmental engineering.

Civil engineers are members of one of the oldest engineering disciplines and can specialize in many things , including water management, construction, transportation and geotechnical, structural, orenvironmental engineering. Civil engineering projects can focus on the design and supervision of the construction of roads, buildings, dams, bridges, airports, tunnels, or water treatment and sewage systems. This specialized profession can easily be turned into a lucrative career with predictable hours, making it easy for civil engineers to provide time for their families. Here are the top five reasons for one to become a civil engineer to help him/her decide this as right career for him/her.

Start Work with Just a Bachelor's Degree

A civil engineer can start career with just a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university and no additional education. New graduates will work with more experienced engineers to receive the job training in their specialized field allowing one to better relate the theory learned in the class room to more real and tangible world situations..

    Great Pay

Most civil engineers work 9 to 5 hours at a firm or government agency for 40 hours a week, though some jobs require more time from their employers depending on the phase of the project. The basic pay, even for a fresher who pursued civil engineering is more compared to other branches. Benefits will vary from one employer to other, but most will receive basic benefits such as paid vacation, sick leave, and health insurance. Many government agencies also offer retirement packages to their employees.

    Growing job Market

The need for additional civil engineers on public works and private projects will create many new job opportunities in these rocky economic times. In a recent poll, the demand for civil engineers is projected to grow from 278,000 employees in 2009 to 3, 45,000 employees in 2019. That is a 24 percent increase in the demand for civil engineers in ten years!

    Exciting Work

Civil Engineers must take on many responsibilities that can make them work, exciting, engaging, and never tedious. Many civil engineers do such tasks as calculating construction costs, designing infrastructure, forecasting opportunities how long a project will take from start to finish, monitoring potential natural disasters and their effect on the project, and checking the city and state regulations.

    Enlightens on leadership qualities

Civil Engineers are the only professionals who work hand in hand with both the extreme classes namely uneducated labor class .
The highly educated professionals which will enlighten them on the leadership qualities vested in an individual.

      Higher Studies

Civil Engineering is one of the primitive engineering fields which involves projecting, scheming and implementing structural bodies. Amongst all branches of engineering, the range and application of civil engineering is the broadest and the most visible. From being a less fancied branch of study some years ago, civil engineering is back in the spotlight
Civil Engineering is the key to many of the issues affecting our lives today. They solve problems, design, build and maintain our living and working spaces. You might design a new stadium, work on a local by-pass or railway line, assess a damaged structure, provide immediate and safe drinking water to a refugee camp, or manage a multi-million pound construction project.
In fact, the entire infrastructural framework of a modern nation is the creation of civil engineers. The credit of building mighty power plants, dams, airports, sea ports, highways, inland waterways and industrial plants goes to civil engineers. These professionals are also engaged in building an unending array of urban structures such as commercial complexes, skyscrapers, tunnels, bridges, roads, urban rapid transport systems, sports stadium, aerodromes, water works, harbours.
A good Civil engineer must have a strong engineering knowledge combined with excellent supervisory and administrative skills. The planning part of their work involves site investigation, feasibility studies, creating solutions to complications that may occur and the actual designing of structures.
Opportunities are aplenty for higher studies also, which also has many takers. One could go for M.Tech. or MS abroad after B.Tech. Students who have passed both B.Tech. and M.Tech. are appointed as consultants in construction industry. A structural consultant should have higher qualifications. Entrepreneurship is another area where civil engineers could try their hand.

      Working domain
Most of the times, civil engineers work in teams or in coordination with many other engineers. They can find work as a supervisor of a construction site or a managerial position or in design, research as well as teaching in government services or private concerns. They can also work as independent consultants.

The minimum eligibility for doing undergraduate program i.e. BE/B.Tech in Civil Engineering is + 2 Science with Physics, Chemistry and Math’s. The selection is generally made on the basis of entrance tests (e.g. IITJEE, AIEEE, BITSAT etc.) conducted at both national and state level. One can also continue his/her study further by joining ME/M.Tech programs offered by various engineering colleges/ universities including the IITs and NITs.

      Job Opportunity
Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works such as bridges, roads, canals, dams and buildings. Civil engineering is the oldest engineering discipline after military engineering, and it was defined to distinguish it from military engineering. It is traditionally broken into several sub-disciplines including environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, water resources engineering, materials engineering, coastal engineering, surveying, and construction engineering. Civil engineering takes place on all levels: in the public sector from municipal through to federal levels, and in the private sector from individual homeowners through to international companies.
